Often described as the best one day hike in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing provides an opportunity to experience some of the most scenic, volcanically active areas of the park. Shuttle services are provided by Tongariro Expeditions.

The Round the Mountain Track showcases the varied volcanic landscapes and alpine vegetation on the flanks of the active volcano Mount Ruapehu. It's a more remote alternative to the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk.

The Rotopounamu Track is an easier 2 hour walk that circles a beautiful lake surrounded by native forest.

There are several walks from Whakapapa Village.
